Remember one of the questions from Introduction?? Any kind of these (cyber) attacks happened before? Yes!! The world has been experiencing attacks and risks since years. Happened might be good or bad, we should remember. So, let’s look into some of the attacks…

Adobe in October 2013 announced the massive hacking of its IT infrastructure. Personal information of 2.9 million accounts was stolen. The software-maker said that it now believed usernames and encrypted passwords had been stolen from about 38 million of its active users. To access this information, the hackers took advantage of a security breach at the publisher, specifically related to security practices around passwords. The stolen passwords had been encrypted instead of being chopped as recommended. Fortunately, if this had led to banking data also being stolen, it was at least unusable because of a high-quality encryption by Adobe. The company was attacked not only for its customer information, but also for its product data. Indeed, the most worrying problem for Adobe was the theft of source code for Photoshop. For instance, the entire source code for the ColdFusion product was stolen as well as parts of the source codes for Acrobat Reader and Photoshop. If other attacks were to be feared, they did not ultimately take place. More details here.

Sony suffered a massive breach (April 2011) in its video game online network that led to the theft of names, addresses and possibly credit card data belonging to 77 million user accounts in what is one of the largest-ever Internet security break-ins.Alan Paller, research director of the SANS Institute, said the breach may be the largest theft of identity data information on record.Sony said it saw no evidence credit card numbers were stolen, but warned users it could not rule out the possibility. The company declined to comment on whether it was working with law enforcement or other parties in its investigation. Yahoo Inc said that at least 500 million of its accounts were hacked in 2014 by what it believed was a state-sponsored actor, a theft that appeared to be the world’s biggest known cyber breach by far. Cyber thieves may have stolen names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth and encrypted passwords, the company said. But unprotected passwords, payment card data and bank account information did not appear to have been compromised, signaling that some of the most valuable user data was not taken. The Yahoo breach follows a rising number of other large-scale data attacks and could make it a watershed event that prompts government and businesses to put more effort into bolstering defenses, said Dan Kaminsky, a well-known internet security expert.
